The Maximum Bet Rule: How One Spin Can Void Your Bonus

Last updated · by the Aussie Top Casinos editors

One spin over the bet cap can cost the bonus and every win made with it. What the rule covers, including double-ups and feature buys.

The maximum-bet rule is one line in the bonus terms, and it is the line most often used to void winnings. While a bonus is active, each bet is limited to a set amount. Go over it once, even by accident, and the terms usually let the casino cancel the bonus and everything won with it. The rule sits alongside a group of related clauses on bonus hunting and irregular play. This guide explains how the cap works, what counts as a breach, and how to stay inside it.

What the maximum-bet rule says

A maximum-bet clause sets the largest single stake allowed while you have an active bonus or are wagering one. It is usually a fixed amount per spin or per hand. Some casinos quote it in A$, others in crypto units. 7BitCasino's bonus terms give two levels:

  • "When playing with bonus funds, the maximum bet is 60 μBTC except Welcome Package Bonuses."
  • For welcome package bonuses, the maximum bet per spin while wagering is 12 μBTC.

Two things follow from this example. First, different bonuses on the same site can carry different caps, so the limit you remember from one offer may not apply to the next. Second, a cap set in bitcoin moves in A$ terms with the coin price, so a bet that was within the limit last month can be over it today.

Where a casino quotes the cap in dollars, it is often a small round figure. The exact amount varies by site and offer, so the only safe number is the one written in the terms you accepted.

Why casinos use it

A bonus with a wagering requirement is designed to be played through in many small bets, which brings the result close to the game's average. Large bets do the opposite: they increase variance, so a player can try to turn a bonus into a big balance quickly and stop. A maximum bet keeps play closer to the average and protects the casino's expected margin on the offer. It is a commercial rule, not a fairness test of the game.

What counts as a breach

The clause is read literally. Common ways players go over the limit without noticing:

  • Raising the stake for a few spins. One spin above the cap is enough under most terms.
  • Gamble or double-up features. 7BitCasino's terms say the maximum bet "includes double up wagers after the game round has been completed (e.g. wagering winnings from X game round on red/black)". Gambling a A$10 win on a card colour is a A$10 bet.
  • Bonus-buy features. Buying a feature typically costs a large multiple of the base stake, so a A$1 stake with a 100x buy is a A$100 wager.
  • Ante bets and side bets. Optional extras raise the total stake per round.
  • Total bet versus line bet. The cap normally applies to the total stake per spin, not the bet per line.
  • Currency conversion. If the cap is in crypto, the stake in A$ that breaches it changes daily.

What happens after a breach

Most terms give the casino the right to cancel the bonus and confiscate winnings when a maximum bet is exceeded. In practice this is often discovered at withdrawal, when the account is reviewed. 7BitCasino's terms say: "All withdrawals will be subject to an internal audit... reserves all rights to void Bonuses or any winnings for failed audits." A breach early in a session can therefore surface days later.

Worked example

All figures are examples, not a specific casino's terms:

  • A$100 deposit, A$100 bonus, 35x the bonus (A$3,500 wagering), maximum bet A$5.
  • You play A$2 spins and are A$1,200 into the wagering when a feature pays A$180.
  • You raise to A$10 for ten spins, then back to A$2.
  • You finish wagering on A$420 and request a withdrawal.
  • At review, the ten A$10 spins breach the A$5 cap. The terms allow the casino to cancel the bonus and remove winnings, so the A$420 can be reduced to nothing or to whatever cash balance the terms protect.

Note also what the cap does to pace. At a A$5 maximum, the A$3,500 requirement needs at least 700 spins; at A$2 a spin, 1,750. Raising the stake would not change the expected cost of wagering, which depends on total turnover and RTP, only how quickly the result arrives and how wide the swings are. Ten spins at double the cap cost the whole session. The extra A$80 of stake had little effect on expected value, which is why breaches are rarely worth it.

Maximum-bet rules sit within a wider set of "irregular play" terms. They are worded broadly and give the casino room to act. Examples from 7BitCasino's published terms:

Clause typeWording in the termsWhat it targets
Delaying bonus rounds"Players are not allowed to delay any game rounds, including free spins and bonus rounds, until they no longer need to wager a bonus or until they make a new deposit"Saving features to play once the bonus is cleared
Progressing bonus stages"The use of bonus funds purely to progress through the bonus stages is prohibited"; winnings "may be considered void"Using bonus money to build up features that pay later in cash
Bonus ratioThe casino may restrict bonuses "once the customer bonus ratio (deposits: bonuses) exceeds 50%"Accounts that mostly play with bonus money
Withdrawal audit"All withdrawals will be subject to an internal audit"Any breach found after the fact
Low balance"A bonus is automatically cancelled once the active bonus balance reaches 1 μBTC or less"Ends the bonus when the balance is effectively empty

Other common clauses, worded differently at each site, cover low-risk betting (for example covering both red and black on roulette), opening several accounts, and switching between high and low stakes to manipulate variance.

Key point: the maximum bet applies to every wager while a bonus is active, including double-ups, feature buys and side bets. One spin over the cap can let the casino void the bonus and the winnings, and it is usually found at withdrawal. Write the cap down before your first spin and set your stake well below it.

What regulators have said about these terms

Regulators in regulated markets have criticised the way these restrictions are presented. In 2017 the UK Gambling Commission said consumers were not being told clearly about "promotion specific play restrictions (eg maximum bet sizes, weighted wagering game requirements)", criticised "excessive discretion", and warned that these terms "can have serious consequences for consumers, including the confiscation of deposits and winnings".

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority later reported operator undertakings that terms should specify the prohibited play patterns rather than reserve sole discretion, that play restrictions should not apply to play with the deposit balance unless the software prevents the breach, and that "if there is maximum stake limit, they should not be able to exceed it". Those rules apply to UK-licensed sites only. Online casino games are not licensed for supply in Australia, so the offshore casinos Australians use set their own terms, and many do not block over-limit bets in the software.

How to stay inside the rule

  1. Find the cap before claiming. Note the figure, its currency, and whether it differs for welcome and later bonuses.
  2. Set your stake at half the cap or less. It leaves room for currency moves and for games that add hidden costs.
  3. Turn off gamble features. Collect wins rather than doubling them.
  4. Avoid feature buys and ante bets while a bonus is active unless the terms clearly allow them.
  5. Do not save bonus rounds for after wagering. Play features when they trigger.
  6. Keep screenshots of the terms as they were when you accepted the bonus.

FAQ

What happens if I bet over the maximum while wagering?

Most terms let the casino cancel the bonus and remove winnings made with it. Breaches are often found during the review at withdrawal.

Do gamble or double-up features count towards the max bet?

Often yes. 7BitCasino terms say the maximum bet includes double-up wagers made after a game round, such as gambling a win on red or black.

Is the max bet the same for every bonus?

Not always. The same casino can set different caps for welcome bonuses and later bonuses, so check the terms of each offer.
